In a development that we all should have seen coming, it would appear that New York City and a good part of the Eastern Seaboard is set to be wiped out by a super-tsunami which literally could come at any time. Apparently the events will be triggered by the imminent collapse of a volcano on one of the Canary Islands.
Here's a quote from the BBC:
"What will happen when the volcano on La Palma collapses? Scientists predict that it will generate a wave that will be almost inconceivably destructive, far bigger than anything ever witnessed in modern times. It will surge across the entire Atlantic in a matter of hours, engulfing the whole US east coast, sweeping away everything in its path up to 20km inland. Boston would be hit first, followed by New York, then all the way down the coast to Miami and the Caribbean."
Well, shit. Even if we manage to save the Hotel Pennsylvania, there won't be much point if everything for miles around is underwater. As this would significantly affect future HOPE conferences, now is the time to start planning on how to deal with this.
The hacker community is strong and together we can pool our impressive and intimidating mind power to figure out a way to divert this colossal wave. We're not suggesting anything as inane as using tachyon bursts or inverting a field array to dissipate the wave's effects. That kind of thing never seems to work anyway. What we can do is begin the process of draining the sea dry so that when that rock eventually does fall down, all it will do is make a bit of noise. As salt water serves no purpose, the rest of the planet will bow down in thanks and hackers will finally get the respect we deserve. Perhaps with all of the land we create, our dream of a homeland will finally be realized.
A discussion of this crisis is ongoing in our HOPE Forums.
