UPDATE: POST OFFICE LIGHTS SPRING ISSUE ABLAZE
Posted 30 Mar 2007 00:29:16 UTC

We were hoping to be able to report some improvement in our tenuous relationship with the post office. Alas, this apparently is not to be.

Readers have already reported receiving charred and singed copies of the recently mailed Spring issue. While we're impressed with the speed of delivery, we're disappointed that the post office has chosen to actually toss some of our issues into an open fire, in direct violation of the terms of the Domestic Mail Manual guidelines: "Open fires in post office loading zones are only to be used for warmth in the winter and barbecues in the summer."

Let us be clear. We have nothing against fire nor do we wish to dictate how postal workers are to perform their duties. Our concern is with our readers, many of whom object to receiving a pile of ashes in a plastic bag with the words "received in damaged condition" printed on the front. Granted, the plastic bag is thoughtful and comes at no additional cost. We've even received a few compliments on the "format improvement." But we would prefer that readers be given the opportunity to read the issue first and then have the chance to light it themselves when the mood strikes.

We're confident that further talks with the postal authorities will clear up any confusion on how our issues should be delivered in the future.
