WUSB CHERNOBYL COVERAGE - APRIL 30, 1986

On April 30, 1986 at 8:30pm, we aired a special on the crisis at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. This was one of those moments when WUSB was at its finest, presenting late breaking news with our own unique perspective. We used a variety of news sources, including shortwave, to try and get the truth out. I did live interviews with Stony Brook professor Les Paldy and Nora Bredes of the Shoreham Opponents Coalition, who theorized as to what this sort of accident could mean for the world. We played some Radio Moscow material and noted how they didn't even mention the accident for the first 24 hours after it happened. We took listener phone calls, including one from Stony Brook professor Ted Goldfarb, and discussed what such an accident on Long Island might be like.
