DECSS CO-AUTHOR TO BE TRIED THIS DECEMBER
Posted 6 Aug 2002 22:57:16 UTC
It appears
that the Norwegian courts announced recently that Jon Johansen
will be tried on December 9, 2002. Johansen is the only non-anonymous
member of the team of programmers which wrote DeCSS, a tool for
decrypting DVDs, written with the intent to allow playback on free
Operating Systems.
Johansen was indicted (link in
Norwegian) last January for his role in creating the
software. According to the EFF's archive
on the case, he faces two years in prison if convicted.
Johansen appeared at the H2K conference in 2000 and spoke about his case and also appeared on a panel on the DeCSS program. (Audio can be accessed at the top of the page.)
