For the entire month of April, we will be donating ten percent of the amount brought in from HOPE ticket sales to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
This unprecedented program comes at an unprecedented time. Never before has there been so much activity on the landscape: evil legislation and laws that threaten online rights (SOPA, PIPA, ACTA); crackdowns from entities like the RIAA and MPAA who use intimidation tactics to get their way; frivolous lawsuits that target everyone from college students to whistleblowers; attacks by authorities on freedom of speech, attacks that pose a threat to everyone who has an opinion and an individual spirit.
Throughout all of this, the EFF has been there - for us and for the world. They were there back in 2000 when 2600 became the first victim of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and they have been a crucial voice in the many battles waged since - in the courts, on the net, and in the streets. We need to ensure that they stick around for a long time and that our support is more than just vocal.
That is why we're doing this. Many of us have been engaged in these challenges for a long time while others are new to the scene. It's essential that we support each other's efforts and make use of the power our numbers can give us. Through this summer's HOPE conference, we can help make this happen.
This year, HOPE will feature talks by EFF staff attorney Hanni Fakhoury on warrantless surveillance, EFF staff attorney Marcia Hofmann on how to protect your data from law enforcement, EFF activist Eva Galperin on the threats to Internet anonymity, and EFF web developer Micah Lee on how to build activist websites. And these are only four of over 100 talks that will be taking place at HOPE! In addition, we have The Yes Men delivering a keynote address, which is bound to be historic and lively. (Click here for the latest updates on confirmed talks.)
Again, for every ticket sold this month, we will donate 10 percent of the proceeds to the EFF. You can be part of a truly amazing conference and support one of the world's most important organizations, all at the same time.
HOPE Number Nine will take place July 13-15, 2012 at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City.
