||2600 NOW AVAILABLE AS A SUBSCRIPTION ON KINDLE|
After months of back and forth with Amazon, along with vital changes
in their policy towards magazines, we're thrilled to announce that it's
now possible to subscribe directly to us on the Kindle.
||WINTER ISSUE OF 2600 RELEASED|
The Winter issue of 2600 is now on newsstands everywhere. Don't be left out in the cold. Subscribe to the paper edition and have it land in your mailbox in the next few days. Or subscribe to the new Kindle edition for immediate gratification. Kindlers in the U.K. can subscribe here.
||20TH CENTURY BACK ISSUE PRICES SLASHED|
When you publish a magazine for over 25 years, the time is going to come when you start to run out of space. That time has arrived for us and we need to clear out space for new issues, new projects, and occasional fugitives. So we've cut the prices of our oldest remaining issues, that is, those published during the 20th century. For us, that period of time was between 1984 and 2000. Back issue prices from that period have been reduced by 60 percent to a mere $2.50 apiece for those that we haven't completely run out of yet.
||VERIZON DENIAL OF SERVICE FINALLY ENDS|
We have now entered the third day of yet another suspicious service interruption on the part of Verizon, the largest local telecom provider in New York. This outage has cut the 2600 mail servers off from the world just as the Spring issue was being finalized.
||JAPAN DISASTER FROM A TECHNOLOGICAL VIEW|
The following comes to us from one of our friends and correspondents in Japan. After reading, please do whatever you can to lend a hand.
||SPRING ISSUE OF 2600 RELEASED|
The Spring 2011 issue is now on stands and in subscriber mailboxes. If you haven't seen it yet, you certainly will soon. If you haven't yet taken the plunge, you can subscribe to our paper edition and have it arrive in mere days. Or subscribe to the new Kindle edition for immediate gratification. Kindlers in the U.K. can subscribe here.
||2600 EXPANDS ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING PLATFORMS|
The saga of our electronic publishing endeavors continues. We've grown weary of waiting for Amazon and Apple to work things out between them so that subscriptions can be available on the iPad, so we've bypassed their stalemate and made individual issues available for those devices. We've also made them available for the Barnes and Noble Nook. More is on the way.
||RADIO ARCHIVE NOTES|
We've now made The Ministry of Truth available in high fidelity sound. It can be downloaded or streamed at both 16kbps or 128 kbps. The Ministry of Truth was a radio talk show that aired on WUSB in 1984.
||HELP US COMPILE THE HACKER CALENDAR|
We've got another fun project we hope you'll like. For the year 2012 - possibly the last year of the world - we're putting together a special hacker wall calendar, filled with all sorts of awesome pictures of technology compiled by our team of photographers. Old and new tech will be represented, large and small, you name it. We've been gathering the best shots for quite some time.
||VOLUME 27 OF 2600 NOW ONLINE - DRM FREE - IN KINDLE, NOOK, AND PDF FORMATS|
Thanks to a strong response for Volume 26 last autumn, a new volume of "The Hacker Digest" has become possible. The most recent year of 2600 is now available in various ebook formats, as well as in PDF format - all DRM-free.
||VERIZON DENIAL OF SERVICE ENDS IN SEVENTH DAY |
It seems incredible that we continue to be victimized by either the horrendous ineptitude or the endless malice of Verizon - but the evidence leaves no other conclusion.
||SUMMER ISSUE OF 2600 AND NEW T-SHIRT RELEASED|
July is racing in with a lot of excitement. Not only do we have a brand new issue for our readers to devour, but we have a whole new hacker t-shirt to show off!
||2600 SUBSCRIPTIONS NOW AVAILABLE ON IPAD/IPHONE|
Looks like your pressure tactics worked. We've been encouraging all of our iPad and iPhone carrying readers to let Amazon know that you really wanted to see a subscription option that worked on these devices. The only way to get an electronic version of 2600 on these devices was to buy each issue individually, which was a royal pain and more expensive.
||CLUB-MATE SOLD OUT FOR EASTERN U.S. - TIME RUNNING OUT FOR WEST|
UPDATE: Club-Mate is SOLD OUT for the eastern part of the U.S. If you're in the western half of the country, you have until midnight Tuesday morning to place your order.
OK, here's the deal. We're down to our last few cases of the German hacker drink known as Club-Mate and we won't have more until at least September. The stock we have now can't be sold past mid August. (It actually stays good many months beyond that date, but it's a legal thing to have a date stamped on every bottle - even bottles of water "expire.") So we're pulling out all stops for the next four days. Then we're pulling the plug, assuming we even make it that far.
||HACKER CALENDAR NOW AVAILABLE TO ALL|
After introducing the world to our brand new Hacker Calendar at Defcon to a very enthusiastic response, we're happy to announce that it's now available to the rest of the world through our online store.
This is a project we've been working on for quite some time. We've collected some of the best photography of telephone technology (this year's theme) and come up with a mind blowing image for each month of 2012, plus the cover shot and a photo image for the closing months of 2011.
But that just scratches the surface. Nearly every day of this 12x12 full size glossy color wall calendar is marked with something that is of interest to the hacker community. Whether it's the latest corporate website hack, a significant change in policy that affects electronic privacy, the introduction or invention of a landscape-changing tool, a hacker in the news, or just some long forgotten hacker fact, it will undoubtedly be found in the 2012 Hacker Calendar.
It's also the year that the world may come to an end and we have noted that date for your convenience as well.
||HOPE NUMBER SIX KEYNOTE SPEAKER MICHAEL HART DIES|
We're saddened to hear of the loss of eBook creator Michael Hart, who delivered one of our keynote addresses at HOPE Number Six in 2006. The following obituary was posted at the Project Gutenberg site. Audio of his HOPE keynote address can be found at HOPE Number Six site.
||2600 MAGAZINE NOW IN THE TOP 10 ON AMAZON KINDLE|
How cool is this? Thanks to our readers and supporters of non-restrictive electronic publishing, we've managed to poke our heads into the top 10 publications available on the Amazon Kindle! We're currently ahead of such giants as PC Magazine, National Geographic, Forbes, and Fortune. We're also at the very top of the list of magazines that don't rely on advertising to keep publishing. This is all possible entirely due to reader support. 100 percent.
||OLD LAPTOPS NEEDED FOR "OCCUPY WALL STREET" COMMUNITY|
By now, despite some initial reluctance on the part of the major media, you've likely heard of the Occupy Wall Street movement, a growing number of people who are literally occupying a park within a couple of blocks of the world's financial center. (You can hear some of the early coverage on the September 28, 2011 edition of our own Off The Hook.)
||AUTUMN ISSUE OF 2600 RELEASED|
It's Autumn and, like clockwork, the Autumn issue of 2600 is now available, in stores, through the mail, and online. We've lost a ton of outlets due to the closing of chain bookstore Borders, so you may have to hunt a little harder to track us down. Please don't give up. You can always subscribe to our paper edition from anywhere in the world, or subscribe to our Kindle edition (in the U.K., click instead.
||HALF-PRICE DEAL ON HACKER CALENDARS FOR HACKERSPACES|
Sure, it's a great idea to get one of our 2012 Hacker Calendars for yourself. But suppose you know a bunch of people who would appreciate the hundreds of historical notes related to hackers that are contained in this full-size wall calendar? People who wouldn't mind having one new nifty technology-themed picture greeting them each month? If you know of such enlightened individuals, then you might want to take advantage of our new hackerspace deal which basically chops the price in half.
||FIRST HOPE VIDEO ARCHIVE GOES ONLINE SATURDAY - HOPE NUMBER NINE TICKETS AVAILABLE|
We hope you haven't made plans for this weekend. Two rather important events will be taking place, both HOPE-related.
||FIRST BATCH OF HOPE TICKETS SOLD OUT - MORE IN DECEMBER|
We expected to sell out our limited number (100) of half-price HOPE Number Nine tickets. We just didn't know it would be THAT fast. In under two minutes, all of the tickets were gone. We've gotten lots of email since then asking when more would be available.
||DONATED LAPTOPS FOR "OCCUPY WALL STREET" DESTROYED IN NYPD ACTION|
As if the news events we've been witnessing over the past few days haven't been disturbing enough, word comes to us that every bit of hardware that was donated to the Occupy Wall Street people from our readers and listeners has apparently been destroyed by the authorities.
||2600 HOLIDAY SPECIALS ONLINE |
While our holiday specials are indeed something to get hysterical about, there's no reason why we have to behave like the WalMart crowds. We're better than that. So if you decide to visit our online store to take advantage of prices so low we're practically giving it all away, please remain calm and remember that others are also in the store trying to get the best value. There's no need for denial of service attacks, buffer overflows, or pepper spray exploits. We will do our best to accommodate everyone.
||SECOND BATCH OF HOPE TICKETS GO ON SALE SATURDAY|
The second batch of tickets to HOPE Number Nine are going to be available at 2:00 pm ET, (11:00 am PT, 1900 UTC, 12:45 am in Nepal) on Saturday, December 10th.
||BEYOND HOPE VIDEO ARCHIVE GOES ONLINE THIS WEEKEND|
Following up on the release of our first HOPE conference videos last month on blip.tv, we're going to be releasing the 18 videos from Beyond HOPE online this weekend. Beyond HOPE was our second conference which took place in 1997, from August 8th to the 10th, and the only HOPE conference not to take place at the Hotel Pennsylvania. As we did last month, we will be rolling out the talks hour by hour, in the order in which they were given.
||CLUB-MATE IS BACK!|
As promised, we've brought more Club-Mate to American shores. Addicts of the insanely popular German energy drink can now celebrate, not only because of the resupply, but because prices have come down and we've got a second flavor.
||20TH CENTURY DISCOUNT ABOUT TO END|
We never said it would be permanent.
Since January, we have been offering a 60 percent discount on available back issues from the 20th century. We did this in order to help clear out space in our bulging warehouse and it's worked out quite well. So on January 1st, we're going to be putting the price back to where it was.
||HOTEL PENNSYLVANIA SAVED?|
In a story that all of us seem to have missed a couple of weeks ago (possibly because it was in the New York Post), Vornado Realty Trust is having second thoughts about tearing down the Hotel Penn (home of our biennial HOPE conferences), at least in the near future. There are a number of reasons, none of which are a huge surprise: the overall state of the economy, the prospect of new commercial buildings going up in surrounding areas which will make it all the harder to get tenants for yet another office tower, and the fact that the hotel brings in a ton of money.
